I've known Kat Hussain for about s year. She is an incredible make up artist and being a make up junkie I could not help but ask her a few questions about the ins and outs of her job.
Describe a day in the life of a make up artist.
Everyday brings a brand new canvas for me to create and transform. Some people want the usual make up looks and others let me go wild on the latest trends. If I could pick a few words to describe my day, then I would say exciting, fun, glamorous but also very hectic.
What inspired you to become a make up artist?
I started as a cabin crew member. I was 17 at the time, being the youngest with a personality as well as having a tom boy dress sense allowed the glamorous trolly dollies a target to bully. Being bullied at work because I didn't have the typical look lead me to purchasing and experimenting with lots of duty free make up. Thats where my journey began.
What is your favourite thing about being a make up artist?
Being able to go make up shopping and say it is for student training.
What is your least favourite thing about being a make up artist?
Tidying up after a photoshoot. I look at all the mess and think why on earth did i not tidy up as i went along.
What made you want to open up your own academy?
Having spent a lot of money and time travelling to various private and college course i found each one missed vital information such as finalising the perfect look. I went to courses across the world and picked up a lot of information as well as techniques. This allowed me to pool all my knowledge together to form my own signature style of make up art.
How many students does the academy receive?
I do not have more than four students per training group. The class sizes are restricted to maximise the learning opportunities and provide students with the attention they need.
If you could be anything besides an make up artist, what would you be?
I would go back to being part of a cabin crew. Doing that job felt like i was on holiday and getting paid for it.
What hobbies and interests do you have outside of being a make up artist?
I love keeping up to date with fashion, styling outfits and shopping. It all interlinks with the beauty industry too which is an advantage.
What are your top five beauty products?
NARS - double refining exfoliator
Creme de la mer's - Moisturising cream
Giorgio Armani- luminous silk foundation
MAC- lipstick in half and half
I heart cherry lashes - lashes lashes and more lashes
